Wire-free navigation, explained properly
Every robot lawn mower has to answer one question a few thousand times an hour: where am I, and what is in front of me? The cheap way to answer it is a buried boundary wire and a random bounce pattern. Vytality answers it the way a self-driving car does — with layered sensors that check each other.
1. LiDAR builds the map
A 360° spinning laser sweeps the property horizontally and 59° vertically, out to 230 feet. Millions of returns per second become a live point cloud of everything around the machine: ground contour, flower beds, fence lines, trunks, tree canopy. Because it is measuring time-of-flight, not brightness, it works identically at 3am and at noon.
2. Cameras classify what LiDAR sees
LiDAR knows something is there. Vision knows what it is. A dedicated AI chip running roughly 10 trillion operations per second classifies 200–300+ object types in real time — garden hose, sprinkler head, dog, football, kerb, puddle — and picks an avoidance behaviour appropriate to each. That is why a Vytality drives around a hose instead of over it.
3. RTK and VIO pin the position
Standard GPS is accurate to a few metres. Tri-frequency Network RTK corrects it to centimetres by comparing your mower's satellite fix against a reference network. Visual-inertial odometry (VIO) fills the gaps: when canopy or a wall blocks the sky, the mower keeps position from what the cameras and IMU see. The result is straight, overlapping cutting lines instead of the drunken stripes GPS-only mowers leave under trees.
4. Drivetrain does the hard part
Navigation is worthless if the machine cannot get there. Four independently driven motors, adaptive suspension and omni-wheel or eccentric-steer geometry let a Vytality climb 80–84% slopes (38.6–40°), step over 50 mm roots and kerbs, and pivot without tearing the turf. Traction control adjusts torque per wheel so it does not dig a hole when one wheel slips.
5. Path planning that actually finishes the lawn
You choose the pattern: perimeter, zigzag, checkerboard or adaptive coverage. The planner minimises missed spots and wasted overlap, remembers where it stopped when it went to charge, and resumes there. Zones and no-go areas are drawn once in the app and saved forever — pool, vegetable beds, the corner where the dog sleeps.
